Why didn't Eitri make the Stormbreaker in the first place instead of the Mjolnir?

Why didn’t Eitri make Stormbreaker instead of Mjolnir?

It does seem weird, right? Why wouldn’t Eitri make a more powerful weapon instead of Mjolnir? Well, the main answer is that there was simply no need for Stormbreaker. Mjolnir served Thor well up until Hela destroyed it, and more importantly Stormbreaker was created with the sole intent of killing Thanos.

Remember when Thanos killed all but Eitri after forcing them to craft the Infinity Gauntlet and practically made Eitri’s hands unusable?

The reason Thanos did THAT to his hands is so Eitri would never make something that could be stronger than the Gauntlet or at least something that could rival it in terms of power. When Thor came and talked to Eitri, he then was able to help Eitri create Stormbreaker. And like I said, Stormbreaker had the intent of killing Thanos and was called a king’s weapon (yet Thor wasn’t king YET, so that could also be another reason since Thor would not be ‘mature’ enough to wield the powerful axe), but since Eitri could literally not craft anything, it was not made earlier. Also, Thanos didn’t PHYSICALLY interfere with any affairs (he made others do it for him) until Infinity War, and once that happened, Thor and Eitri made Stormbreaker to kill him.

So simply put, Stormbreaker was never made since it was not needed until Thanos came. It would be pretty interesting if it was made earlier, though.
