If Hulk and Thor were in Captain America: Civil War, whose side would they be on and why?
If Hulk and Thor were in Captain America: Civil War, whose side would they be on and why?
I’ll start with the easy one: Bruce Banner.
Bruce Banner was on the run from the U.S. Government for years, because General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross wanted to research his condition to replicate it and essentially create an army of hulks. Banner knows this and it’s why he’s done everything possible to stay out of Uncle Sam’s reach and protect his genetic secrets.
So Hulk would side with Captain America for these reasons:
- He has past history with governments trying to control him and his powers, and General Ross specifically.
- He can barely control it himself; he already dislikes being labelled as enhanced and has been through hell because of it. He wouldn’t wish that on anyone else.
- He cooperates voluntarily with the Avengers. He was tricked into visiting the Helicarrier as a gamma radiation consultant, and after helping save the world, he stayed on to help find the scepter. He can leave anytime he wants and nothing can stop him.
He may also choose to abstain from actually fighting since:
- Natasha Romanov would be on the other side and he has a hard time controlling the Hulk
Next up, Thor.
Thor initially helped the Avengers because Loki was attacking Midgard, so he had to intervene. He never joined the Avengers. He then helped them locate Loki’s scepter prior to Ultron’s creation, with the intent of bringing it to Asgard where it would be safer. He still was not a member of the Avengers, just their ally.
Asgard’s policy is that Midgard is too primitive and backward for any interaction with other realms. They are allowed to forge their own paths and rule themselves as long as they keep to themselves (and don’t use powerful alien artifacts like the Tesseract).
Thor would most likely take a non-interventionalist stance for two reasons:
- He is not affected by the laws. He can’t be contained and he will still intervene on Midgard any time alien artifacts come into play.
- Midgard must make its own path without alien intervention
Post-Convergence Thor (after the events of the Dark World) would recognize that the brashness of young warriors could have unpredictable and terrible consequences, like his folly on Jotunheim with the Frost Giants. On Asgard, the monarchy decides when, where, and how all threats are handled and when forces are deployed, but life is also somewhat utopian there.
Thor may recognize that Midgard’s people are not sophisticated enough to handle authoritarian rule or are still too prone to prejudice toward the unfamiliar.
While Thor would understand Midgard’s desire to control those with greater power, Asgard places those with the most power in the positions of greatest power and duty.
If he did intervene, it would be for one of two reasons, both of which technically place him on the side of Captain America:
- To stop Vision from using an Infinity Stone to affect the outcome, or
- To protect his friends from being imprisoned and enslaved because of a flawed piece of legislation.
In summary:
Hulk would not sign, would side with Captain America, and would not fight.
Thor would not sign, would side with neither, and might fight against Vision.
